And let me remind you that McCain was leading Obama for most of Aug if not all of August. Things changed in Sept.
Yeah, the economy went south and McCain was caught flat-footed despite putting up some show of effort.

Obama at the time was the rising challenger. The "Hope and Change" candidate.

Now he's the incumbent. The man. The Powers That Be.
