Rod, while I'm as much of a MSFT hater as you are, I do feel NT is perhaps the best bit of software I've seen from MSFT since its inception in the mid-70s. Not perfect, by a long shot, but when compared with the usual crap coming from Redmond its pretty good.
Certainly, it ranks as an industrial-strength OS, the first of which MSFT has produced. It has reasonably good security, both in the file system and within the kernel, and the file system is much improved. Of course, performance is sacrificed and when there IS a crash it can be tough to diagnose. But overall, I think NT is a pretty good system. To me, it is the only logical choice for a NOS today.
There IS the possibility that broad acceptance of Java will have the effect of "splintering" the OS business, bringing us to something akin to what we saw in the late-70s -- numerous available OS platforms. I'm not sure this is a good thing, although with Java about it should be less problematic. Who knows, maybe DEC will bring to the PC market a windowing version of VMS or the old RSTS/E dinosaur -- both great systems. Nahhhh... |
