The reason is very simple. This reflects the state of.......................................................... consciousness of the broad populace. Consciousness likes to entertain itself, and the part of consciousness that entertains itself with profit-making can recognize both the entertainment value and the global state. The word entertainment does not automatically imply pleasure ....... just a focus of attention. A better word may be distraction. (But I suspect you already know this. :) )
