Here is a except from the most currect lancet. Its at best skeptical, at worst a bit damming. I am just being objective here. ........................
".2 weeks ago The Lancet carried a report of a phase I/II trial on the safety and kinetics of a recombinant amino-terminal fragment of human bactericidal/ permeability-increasing protein (rBPI21).........................

"To conclude that rBPI21 will reduce mortality in fulminant meningococcaemia would be adventurous. The positive predictive value of these prognostic indices is poor and patient numbers small. The average time gap between the administration of parenteral antibiotics and start of rBPI21 infusion was 5ú7 h. By this time concentrations of endotoxin and proinflammatory cytokines had reached concentrations beyond which rBPI21 can be expected to have an effect. It is difficult to conceive that any single agent will drastically alter the course of the disease once the inflammatory cascade has been widely activated"

Also article started that 7 of 25 required some type of amputation, possibile reason (I am speculating) is that those are kids that perhaps might have died, instead are saved but sicker. IMO
