A black box for cars tops Idea Quest winners

By Bob Bellinger

Irvine, Calif. - The 10 winners of the Wyle Electronics/EE Times Idea Quest
contest have been announced. All are to be presented with their prizes at
tonight's ceremonies marking EE Times's 25th anniversary in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Neil Mammen of Nuko Information Systems in San Jose, Calif., was the
grand-prize winner of the General Motors EV1 electric car with his
submission of a design for "The AutoBlackBox."

He used devices from four sponsors: Altera Corp. (Flex 10k family), Intel
Corp. (Smart 3/5 flash memory), Motorola Inc. (MPC860 series) and
National Semiconductor Corp. (LM78 microprocessor system hardware
monitor and LVDS data-ink solutions)

Mammen describes it as "the equivalent of an airplane black box." In an
accident, insurance officials and law enforcement could examine data on
changes in critical items like speed, direction, location, points of impact and
other factors.
