One thing you should be aware of concerning American Royalty Trusts (aside from the tax issues) is that they are self depleting. In other word's their trust status relates to a particular oil field that has a so called shelf life after which it will no longer be able to pump oil and pay royalties (unlike real estate trusts and master limited partnerships which can acquire other property). One needs to find out the shelf life of each particular property he is contemplating investing in and then estimate the monthly payments over the years as to whether they will exceed the up front investment.
