The two aren't directly related, and there's still value to this day in getting cheap PCs to Africa. He'd probably have felt more like a failure if he got thousands of PCs deployed, only to find they were only being used for social media.

There's very little wireline infrastructure in Kenya. Less than 1 fixed telephone subscription per 100 inhabitants (higher in urban areas), compared to 61.6 mobile cellular subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.

0.01 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. only 3.6% of households have a computer. The literacy rate is relatively high, around 87%.
