Entire Solar Sector Is Taking The Hit, Too

You read about First Solar’s ( FSLR) woes over at my colleague Tiernan Ray’s blog: The company is reportedly slowing the installation of solar panels at the world’s largest photovoltaic power plant in Arizona. Shares are down 17% on the session.

Well, it’s the entire battered sector, too. The Guggenheim Solar ETF ( TAN) is falling 5.7% Thursday and the Market Vectors Solar Energy ETF ( KWT) is down 6.4%.

The negativity is also being driven by weak earnings reports the last two days, plus some nasty Wall Street analyst commentary. China Sunergy ( CSUN), JA Solar ( JASO) and Yingli Green Energy ( YGE) each delivered disappointing earnings reports.

ThinkEquity analysts Colin Rusch and Noah Kaye cut their investment rating on Yingli Green Energy to “Sell” from “Hold,” on account of what the analysts describe as “persistent losses.” They set a price target of one dollar for the stock, which was down 11% to $1.65 in late Thursday trading. Maxim Group’s Aaron Chew warns of “mounting” cash drain and net debt that “has reached dangerous heights.”

This morning, Citigroup Asia solar analysts Timothy Lam, Sean Lee, Pierre Lau and Cathy Chan warned of “uncertainty on end-demand” and “trade wars” for companies under their coverage.

Phew!
