Sudan's Beshir vows to defeat rebels this year

KHARTOUM, Nov 29 (AFP) - Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir has
vowed to defeat rebels opposing his government in central Sudan by
the end of this year.

The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), active in both the
south and the center of the country, took up arms in 1983 to end
domination of the mainly Christian and animist south by the
Arabised, Moslem north.

At inconclusive peace talks in Nairobi earlier this month, the
SPLA asked Khartoum to set up a "confederation" of north and south
Sudan, but the call was rejected.

"Our armed forces are determined to defeat the rebel forces of
John Garang and Yousuf Kuwah this year if they fail to respond to
the peace call," Beshir was quoted as saying in the local press
Saturday.

Garang has led the SPLA since 1983, while Kuwah, a Nuba
tribesman, leads the SPLA in the Nuba mountains of South Kordofan.

Speaking at a rally Friday in Kadugli, capital of South
Kordofan, Beshir said Kuwah would not be able to enter the town "by
force" and that rebel strongholds in the Nuba mountains "will be
eliminated."
