The history of the world is the history of aggressive "tribes" with better weapons taking stuff away from the more primitive. I think everyone with a brain eventually "gets" that. I think I remember the biological warfare was mostly false. Plague swept through the Indian communities untintentionally- for the most part. Just as the black plague swept through Europe, borne on the wings of the silk and spice trades.

And sure, there's a lot about slavery in the high school lessons. And in the literature books we have prose and poetry from slaves, and from freed blacks. In fact, there is a magnificent poem about George Washington written by a black woman in our literature book. Her name was Phillis Wheatley- if you've never heard about her, you should read up on her. She was an amazing and inspirational person.
