I don't think many people give credit to the gov't for their success. I certainly don't. I give credit to myself and my tax money. You see, the government is us. It's not this special thing that does us favors. Everything I have I built for myself. I put myself through college and paid back my debt. I worked my ass off all my life and now in a few short years, when I retire, I will pay for my own retirement in the full expectation that I'll never see a dime from social security.
The things I get from local, state, and Federal gov't like police, roads, etc, all get paid for by my tax money. Nothing was given to me. Or you. Nothing is free.
That's the problem with this kind of thinking. Everyone seems to think of gov't as this kindly grandfather or uncle who hands out all these special favors. That's bullshit. Those favors are simply a repayment of your taxes and they shouldn't be squandered on wasteful spending.
And btw, Obama's statement of "you didn't build that" was taken out of context by the Rs and they made hay out of it. I know what Obama was trying to say. He was ultimately saying that government can do good and big things. But what he misses, is that hell yes, we built that. DARPA may have invented the internet, but it was our tax money that funded it. NEVER forget that. Yes, we sure as hell built that. |
