I agree with Bill, Gen. Dempsey was speaking for Obama.

Obama wants nothing to happen before the election. Remember how anti-war his base is. I don't think any normal rally-round-the-flag rules apply to the Obama campaign; rather, I think a Mideast shooting war is seen as a wedge issue that would unite the Republicans but divide the Democrats, and force Obama to act contrary to the desires of his base. Obama would rather look risking anti-Israel than have to deal with an Israeli attack before Nov 6th.

But by the same calculus, Bibi (who understands American politics very well) may have decided to up the pressure on his own. Now Obama has decided to cut Bibi off by refusing military support. I doubt Obama could pull it off in the event, against the will of Congress and the American public. The Iranians, meanwhile, know their window of opportunity may close next Jan 20th.
