That's just the problem. The vast majority aren't as plugged in as we are to the news. Most people at best watch a little of the network news or CNN, and go about their lives. Most people, I'm afraid, think everything is fine because our lives seem to tick on as usual and the train keeps running on time. We are so rich that the strains at the seams aren't immediately perceptible. There are only a few outward markers: commodity prices, availability of credit, whether they know somebody that can't get a job, etc. That's why it's so hard to get across the magnitude of the difficulties we are in. How do you explain to the average person the long-term problem of trillion-dollar budget deficits? Just don't have the attention span, and assume it can't be THAT bad.
