Maybe the real reason that the trades don't go through even on slow days is that no one is at Datek to work your trades. I've noticed more and more that Datek is popping up as an MM in many securities. If there routing system is sending your trades to their traders to make their margin, when they're away on vacation things will run slower. Take a look at the Nasdaqtrader site and you'll see that Datek's MM activities have increased significantly since they started growing their online service. Things aren't as automatic as they would have us believe. Any wonder why you can mostly buy at the top and sell at the bottom?
