I have installed Windows 8 ToGo on a USB connected disk. It was one of the Demo versions. I did not write about my experiences or observations beyond mentioning that it was possible and worked as claimed.

Of course, if you choose to do this with the "Real" Windows 8 once it's released, you'll need to pay for a license.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. An interesting site that guides you through running Windows XP from a USB stick: USBoot

P.P.S. You can also run Windows 7 PE from a USB stick. . .

Instructions from Microsoft: WinPE

Instructions I think are easier: Win7 PE

I haven't been able to install a full version of Windows 7 to run on a USB stick (yet.)
