I think you're right, John. They can afford to let the ads themselves slide, because the story has already been firmly implanted in millions of minds. Many of the people who believe it today would do so even if Jesus himself sat in their lap and told them not to. They've already achieved the desired effect. Though, to be honest, I'm pretty sure it's not something that ends up helping them. Those kinds of tactics, so forcefully exposed, do tend to drive negatives up. Neither Romney nor Ryan can afford to have higher negatives.
