Nokia (NOK) CEO Elop Says WP8 Event Will Evoke 'Wow' Factor; Dismisses Samsung Challenge

7:48 AM ET, 09/05/2012 - Street Insider
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) CEO Steven Elop spoke with the WSJ Tuesday, teasing what might happen at the company's corporate event today.

What sort of reaction is Elop hoping to see? He expects people will say, "Wow, this has clearly been years in the making, it's wonderful work - this is the thing that Nokia has always been known for."

When Elop was asked about Samsung's recent WP8 smartphone reveal, Elop dismissed it, saying Nokia will debut "the very first working Windows Phone 8 device."

It's no secret that Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone has had a rough ride so far. It's Windows Phone 7 operating system still garners a small part of the overall smartphone market. Microsoft has aimed to change its thinking, now developing more of an ecosystem across multiple devices, from PCs to smartphones, as it looks to be more competitive with the likes of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) in one of the most robust growth segments in the consumer electronics market right now.

No one could be more happy about Microsoft's efforts than Nokia and its investors.
