Real spoofing, which I believe is a crime, involves using the person's real email address. My guess is that the scammer likely just uses your name, not your actual email address (e.g. they might use SIRon@scamsite.ru instead of your current MagicRonNotMike@aol.com address). I doubt it's hacking as well. I'd be interested to know if those who are affected are on Facebook.

For example, here's an example of what you'd see if subscribing to a simple daily horoscope feed. Note that you must indicate you are willing to give up your real email address, your birthday, and your friends' birthdays. Your friends are already public. This allows the app to target all your friends with the applicable zodiac sign. It also builds up a database correlating your Facebook page to your email, such that you can now be targeted via email instead. I'm sure there are huge such master lists out there you can buy.



BTW, I know my email address is showing in the picture. I don't care as I've posted it countless times.
