Neisseria meningitidis is the bacteria, and meningococcemia is the specific clinical picture. A DNA probe test will detect the DNA of the bacteria. It does not matter the specific clinical condition, if the bacteria DNA is found you got it. Probably has to do with PCR probes, they are fast and specific. Both terms and its equivalents are used in dutch (my guess).
