I see it differently. Romney wasn't well known in 2008. EVERYONE knew that the GOP would lose in 2008. You'll notice the real election drama was about who would get nominated by the Dems, Hillary or Obama. We all sweated that race. McCain was a fall guy thrown at the 2008 election as a placeholder until they could get their act together. Romney's race in 2008 was about getting his name out, so he could compete in the 2012 race.

Now what we have here in 2012 is a REAL race. It's a toss up, though I'd give Obama the slight edge on popularity and Romney the slight edge on funding (including Super PACs).
