Hi, Del!!! What did you do for Thanksgiving, anyway? I hope you caught that wonderful documentary on PBS, "Daphne and Eleanor", about the woman who tries to save orphaned baby elephants in Africa, and the first elephant orphan she saved many years ago, who takes the babies once they have regained their physical health and shows them how to be elephants again, and how to survive in the wild.

We don't always have turkey for Thanksgiving, since I am trying to give up eating birds in general. However, my husband's employer gave him one, and so I cooked it up. I am actually feeling pretty bad that I did that, since I saw a presentation on Primetime Live about how turkeys are not stupid, but instead inquisitive and sweet and playful, and like to approach humans. There are now several farms all over the United States, incidentally, where you can sponsor a turkey for $15.00, adopting it but leaving it in their care, so that it lives out its lifespan without a throat-slitting at the end. They feed the turkeys a vegetarian feast on Thanksgiving, incidentally.

Aside from humanitarian concerns, turkeys are bred for the most part in horribly crowded conditions, and often have their toes and beaks cut off so that they do not damage each other when they become aggressive because of the overcrowding. You can imagine how traumatic and inhumane this experience of life is!! But an even better reason for not eating them is that the grain they eat would feed a lot of starving humans more efficiently, and leave the planet a healthier and more balanced place to be.

For the record, though, this is what we had for Thanksgiving:

baby organic lettuces with slices of red onion, avocado and tomato in a vinaigrette dressing

roast turkey with San Francisco sourdough stuffing

buttermilk mashed potatoes

gravy with pan drippings

candied spiced yam and marshmallow casserole

brussels sprouts

a fruit relish of cranberries, sliced oranges, walnuts and coconut

pumpkin pie with whipped cream

Yes, all of that took only fifteen minutes to eat, and I will never bother with it again!!! Please remind me of this next year, when I get nostalgic and sentimental.

Incidentally, speaking of whiz, bang, thank you ma'am episodes like my turkey dinner, a recent survey of men's sexual performance, as reported by Dr. Dean Edell on ABC, indicates that for most men, the ENTIRE sex act is performed in less than one minute, from beginning to end. This was done for a study on the rationale of using antidepressants to lengthen the act, and a determination was made that this would be a workable idea, as the times are then much extended. Paxil works better than Prozac, as I recall. I think this is all very funny!!!!!!!
