Yes, I was struck by that comment, but also the paragraph that followed:

Don’t get me wrong, I thought Mitt Romney himself gave the speech of his life in Tampa, Fla. But it was not enough to ignite a Republican electorate that never saw at a decent hour Herman Cain (duh, an African-American conservative who can wow crowds), or Newt Gingrich (alone, and as the firebrand he can be) or Donald Trump, who could have electrified the crowd without talking to an empty chair.

The "speech of his life"? Show Cain, Gingrich or Trump to a national audience? Would any of those guys actually inspire a national audience, or just reinforce the image of not just a stodgy GOP, but a nutty one?

The column seemed to be a mixture of sound common sense and GOP nuts, which is a combination that can create cognitive dissonance in me.
