I'm of the opposite opinion, at least for the most part. I think those who aren't staring directly at and admiring their specific company "tree" (CEO's in particular) have a much better chance of comprehending the industry-wide "forest". They can see THE BIG PICTURE because their views are unobstructed and undistracted.

That isn't to say that an individual CEO can't overcome this tendency. Gates is a good example, but even he very nearly blew it with the Internet. Chambers? Don't know, but I tend to shut these guys off whenever they drift off into hyperbole. Incidentally, I owned CSCO until very recently -- too pricey, for now.
