One commenter at the Tribune observed that the phrase "as American as apple pie" could also be seen as racist if "people of color don't eat it."

Bullshit, put an apple pie in front of anybody who is hungry and they'll eat it.

That's just crazy shit. Whoever came up with that level of thought manipulation really needs to be eliminated from our culture. Send them to a remote island where they can't do any damage.....preferably a desert island.
