LindyBill, I have to acknowledge the fact that you get it. The simplistic allegation that Bin Ladin and his allies attacked us because they "hate our way of life" simply obscures the fact that our fundamentalist enemies are ruthless, complex thinkers steeped in intrigue and that they had goals and plans that motivated their strike on 9/11. And, as ruthless and brutal as they are, they're not cowards.

That's why its so important to outthink them, refrain from knee jerk reactions, use world opinion to our advantage, assemble teams of experts and rely upon their opinions, sometimes act quietly and without fanfare when we hit back, publicize our peaceful nature and make sure that when we do strike back in a public way that we strike back efficiently and proportionately.

In the end the best way to end terrorism is not to attack the countries where it finds its support but rather to reduce popular support for terrorism in those countries where it breeds. And, of course, if we adopt a "do no harm" foreign policy and let other countries deal with their problems in instances where there is no international coalition to intervene, the incentive to strike America will wane.
