Well, there is English and then there is English. Proper grammar is straight forward, I would agree. But there can even be a philosophy of how to teach that.

When my youngest daughter was young she had a knack for writing. Still has, even though she mainly studies the sciences. Getting ready to go back for more at the age of 30. She phones me once a week and we have deep philosophical discussions and I am happy with how she has passed me up in so many areas.

She had few grammar skills when young, but the depth of her observations and ability to turn a phrase were remarkable. I was careful not to stifle that creativity by even mentioning her grammatical mistakes.

But how do you teach Macbeth, Camus or any author without a philosophy of life? Without an awareness? Maybe you don't teach those subjects and only teach grammar?

But that is why I like the randomness one finds in teachers today. Kids get to see it all and it avoids dogma which is the largest danger.

I think where you and I might disagree, is that I believe knowledge and wisdom, has (as they say) a liberal bias. I do not think there is an equal conservative philosophy, as I too often mention.

I think everyone on this thread has more to offer the student, than Romney. I think we are light years ahead of Romney in absolute terms-lol. Not sure how to test that though?
