No, it doesn't "change everything." But it does change some things. And the relevant phrase in your post is "The Libyan gov't, (what there is of it),". No, I don't think that they or anyone else should have seen this coming. Who heard about this video prior to the attacks? The film itself is idiotic and the reaction to it is no less despicable than it was predictable.

I'm confused about something..... If the purpose of having a well armed security detachment attached to our embassies is to keep our officials safe, why isn't there a pile of dead muslim fanatics in front of the embassy entrance?

That is a good question, and I don't know the answer to it. I wish I did.
