Your argument is confusing. If debt is only an abstraction - why in gawds name do we have to pay it back? Debt is very real and the payment out of taxes to service the debt of the government is very real. If debt was only an abstraction - then of course krugmans idea makes sense. Of course people have real needs - even Joe. But the needs have a requirement of cost. It's sure folly to think we have the ability to pay for an endless list of needs - a list that increases over time especially in health care.
