Jim,

<< I 'm going to see if I can find a "late" model P-166MMX and see if I can
overclock it it 233. If I can't get the multiplier up I'll just increase the bus speed.
Not to worry about the PCI bus, the mobo I'll try it on has an ansynchronous bus
setting that lets the PCI bus run at 33Mhz rather than 1/2 the bus speed. >>

I picked up a couple of retail boxed 166MMX chips on Saturday and tested them. Sure enough the x3 capability is castrated.

I use an ASUS P55T2P4 and was able to change the bus to 83.5MHZ at 2.5X for 208MHZ...and it still runs great and cool. I am using the standard heatsink and fan that came with the processor. I am pretty sure they are 233MHZ chips since they run so go... and of course INTC went thru the trouble of disabling the X3 capability.

It is still something for nothing with the right Motherboards.

BTW, what kind of a board are you using to maintain the PCI bus at 33MHZ???
