Well, that was sneaky, Bill. I agree with your whole note. This is no way to run an argument!

As far as Bill gates divestiture is concerned, that would of course be the best thing for him. He may even know this.

Consider his current problem, 35 billion dollars all in one basket. (He's been losing a little lately.) Yet if he sells any significant amount, the shares of MSFT would crash. He can try to diversify by buying cable companies or what have you, but it's still under that one umbrella.

On the other hand, if he is 'forced' to diversify, nobody has a confidence crisis. Share prices probably go up, ala the baby bells. He can move maybe 2/3 his money into bonds and other enterprises, and the world's second-greatest fortune (2nd? Brunei?) stays intact. He still gets to run a great big company which is now relatively untrammeled. Or give it all up to do something completely different.

Sounds nice to me.
