an accelerated walling off of muslim countries from the rest of the world - which I contend would have happened anyway over a longer period of time

Separation and "clash of civilizations"... That's what Hutchinson predicted. And this is exactly what Islamists want. Their grievance against America and the West is not so much about a silly movie or pictures of Muhammad, but the greater threat to their beliefs and traditions. They find that we are corrupting them - and, from their point of view, we are. They think that they can hide behind an iron curtain -- and they are doing a fine job building one.

In fact, I'm sure that their problem with America and the West is far greater than the one they have with Israel. Israel is an "insult" and a thorn in the side of Islam. American and Western influences, otoh, are a true existential threat. Why? Because, unlike us, they do not have a way of separating religion, law, culture and politics. To their true believers, all those things are one.

The ones who will get screwed the worst will be the "moderate" Muslims. They will find themselves living under despotic theocratic regimes which will not look kindly at religious moderation. Resisters will be liable to get promptly relocated into "reeducation" establishments.
