When Windows 7 was being developed, Microsoft made a couple of versions available to the public for testing several months before the release.
During this time, I was able to iron out most wrinkles and eventually I was able to use Windows 7 as my only operating system. By the time Windows 7 was released in October 2009, I was both familiar and comfortable with it.
With Windows 8, Microsoft again made a couple of trial versions available. I immediately installed Windows 8 and set to work "Making it my own."
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the new Metro user interface into an efficient working environment. The difficulties seemed both numerous and insurmountable. I found myself returning to the traditional desktop to accomplish even the simplest tasks. Even then, the combination of missing (omitted) components and the jarring interruption of the Start Screen's appearance made my endeavours an exercise in frustration.
Note: I use a traditional desktop, a big monitor screen, a keyboard, and a mouse -- not touch enabled.
There are a number of improvements in Windows 8 that I like. The Explorer Ribbon has some nice features. The new Task Manager is a joy to use. Little things like native support for .ISO files is a nice addition. Copying huge files with Windows 8 is much better.
Overall, FOR ME, Windows 8 improvements do not compensate for Windows 8 deficiencies.
