"we wanted to get through with the Japanese phase of the war before the Russians came in." (U.S. News and World Report, Aug. 15, 1960, We Were Anxious To Get the War Over, pg. 66).

Of course they wanted to end the war quickly for multiple reasons.......one to prevent Russia from invading Japan and claiming territory. But I will state again, there was no credible way for Russia to launch a sea borne invasion of Japan in that time frame. From where? Vladivostok? That's over 200 miles of open ocean. Do you realize the size naval force required to make such an opposed landing. You are dreaming. We stopped them from occupying all of Korea by landing a minimal number of troops in the South and the US invasion of Japan in the October time frame would have been many months before Russia could have gotten involved.
