I'll watch and wait. :) Have been since the women called for a march for the rights of women just after whosit fell and their brothers didn't show up and left them to be beaten and abused by both thugs and the military on their own. And then it happened to the Coptics when they stood up for their voice and rights.
Yes, I think of after the Civil War when it was "agreed" that women would drop their fight for the vote at that time so that all men could have the right, cause ya know... that'd just be a step so far for dudes to deal with. Something that is almost a given is that after a revolution for freedom, some men will take over from the men gotten rid of and women will be in the same ol same ol situation.
Yes, and how long did it take for women to get the right to vote after this country was established? Many, many decades............and we dared to call ourselves a democracy during those decades. It wasn't until the 19th amendment was passed in 1920 that the US became a true democracy........and even then, there was rampant discrimination in most states if not all........against women and minorities. Even today, the Rs are trying to repress the non white vote. Its disgusting.
I wish the Egyptians were acting more like the Libyans and Tunisians but unfortunately, their path seems to be different. However, as with most people who live in glass houses, we are in no position to throw stones. Instead, we must wait it out and hold out carrots where feasible. I believe in the Arab Spring, and in the end, I think it will lead to true democracy in the Arab countries for all their people. |
