Money can't buy engineering competence and you can ask Oracle about their failed application development tools attempt for more information. That, by the way, wasn't exactly rocket science. As far as the top-brains, what MSFT really needs is to accept the superior models that are washing about their heads. The problem is how to adopt CORBA and Java while still keeping customers held captive. That's going to be hard to do now that Java is an International Standard. Having the top-brains doesn't mean anything if you can't implement. It's going to be the top-hands that come up with the most practical and efficient solutions. Java will have a million developers sooner than anybody thinks. From that pool will emerge technology which no team of rocket scientists will have even considered. Microsoft doesn't have any technology to speak of outside of a run-of-the-mill operating system. What they do have is unlimited funds to create applications with unlimited budgets that meet the requirements of customers. Unfortunately for them, small budgets are all that will be needed to create equally compelling applications for Java as a direct result of the truly component based design.

There is nothing which could threaten Java now, but it looks like IBM and Intel will be the first to really cash in on this technology. When Intel comes out with their first NC and IBM comes out with eSuite it's all downhill for Microsoft.
