Their history has proven when it comes to product launches, they know how to manage expectations and product distribution.

A perfectly managed product launch would be that you sell the last unit you have in inventory to the last person that wants one. "Perfect" isn't possible in a world where 50+ million people want the product simultaneously, and where you are depending on the perfection of dozens of component manufactures that may be making their particular, complex widget for the first time.

Of course there are hiccups in the process... but Apple does a very good job managing the process. Shortages on the Apple introduction scale are a "high class problem".
