It's surprising what a narrow view of life most people take. Take being the operative word. They would bring back slavery if they could do so, and they have done, by defining taxpayers as a slave class to be robbed for self-dealing. Being a modern slave is a voluntary activity though, so many people are abandoning the "job", giving up, and joining the slave-owning class. If one can get into the senior ranks of the slave owners, it's also enormously profitable. Look at Al Gore and swarming hordes of hangers-on to the coat-tails of the politicians who allocate the spoils.

Eisenhower was just before my time but he seems to have been quite sensible from those few writings I have read of his.
