Steve Jobs is a visionary and is not a good comparison (IMHO). Perhaps a better example is the darling of the Democratic party... Warren Buffet.

I see your point about the difference between active and passive investments. However, I think his quoted statement is completely reasonable... unless one thinks hedge funds and active management companies are somehow immoral.

From the transcript accompanying the longer video, referring to Bain and Company, and to Bain Capital:

"Three reasons. We recognized that we had the potential to develop a significant and proprietary flow of business opportunities. Secondly, we had concepts and experience which would allow us to identify potential value and hidden value in a particular investment candidate. And third, we had the consulting resources and management skills and management resources to become actively involved in the companies we invested in to help them realize their potential value."

This sounds completely reasonable to any pro-capitalism investor.

Hedge fund and Venture capital companies of today conduct themselves with similar philosophies.
