that was a smart move on Russell's part. He had to see the writing on the wall. But the sex therapist chick (doesn't she look a bit like Rachel Maddow without the glasses?) is hooked in with the malcolm, so Russell had to know that his only chance was to join the herd. It won't matter, Russell is so obnoxious that he is next to go anyway.
