When I was 26 I spent 6 weeks on the Miller Freeman in the Bearing sea. A 219 foot otter trawl research vessel . They trawled about 10 times a day down to 600 feet and I got to see what they brought up. We were researching crab migrations.

Got to eat all the king and tanner crab we wanted. We caught halibut up to about 35 lbs. Larger than that and they could outswim the trawl? Lots of cod, pollock, octopus, and the occasional odd fish. I was just doing basic data collection and throwing the fish back into the water.

I saw a huge red tide. Water was blood red. We pulled some crab up through it and after I ate them I wondered if I would die from red tide and thought I was too young-lol..

I was fresh out of the Bay area, so it was all a great wonderful mystery to me.
