I think there are several different issues that are, and should be, addressed.

Technologically - Can it be done.....certainly on a limited scale so far, but what about more complex situations
Safety - there are good arguments that robocars will be safer than human drivers.....in most cases.
Privacy - In the era of facebook, maybe this isn't quite the issue it should be
Culturally - People like to drive. Sure, there is an upside to being able to do some work on the morning commute, but like you said, do we really want to give up that autonomy.

I still think that legal liability is what will kill the robocar. No longer will the driver of the car be the person legally responsible for damages. All of the liability will be on the robocar manufacturer. I think that will be a strong factor in the extinction of that industry.
