The Ubiquity of Microsoft nytimes.com

What's that distant noise I hear? No, not NOISE. Just the ilk herd continues to gather. Our latest recruit: Denise Caruso at the Good Gray NYT. This is another I'm tempted to excerpt half of, it's calmly stated but points out certain... inconsistencies in a large number of standard company lines on the antitrust front. I'll restrain myself and just quote the conclusion.

Microsoft's defenders say that antitrust laws in the United States are outdated with respect to emerging technologies, and few would argue with that point. But that does not answer the question of whether it is possible, given Microsoft's huge holdings and its chain-linked business strategy, to compete with the company on its own turf.

And to date, no one has stepped forward to suggest changes to antitrust laws that would better reflect the realities of the information age -- laws that would balance free-market vitality against the prudence of allowing any single company to control so much of our digital future.

But, it's a Good Thing that Microsoft is such a great monopolist. We hear it here all the time from people who glorify that monopoly in every context except the legal one. Meanwhile, the herd grows. Next big news wave due Dec. 5.

Cheers, Dan.
