Another signpost on the road to perdition, Catch 22 style.

My wife had lunch with an old friend today who was born in the US. Apparently, the IRS is now demanding that all expats living abroad must have been declaring all bank and investment accounts every year, the penalty for not doing so $10,000 per year.

And if you attempt to renounce your citizenship, the IRS demands a hefty premium to allow said renunciation (as well as providing that aforesaid declaration).

Since my wife was also born in the US, it was an "Oh shit" moment for both of them.
