Paul V,

You mentioned about Culture and its implication in the fortunes among South-east asian people. I'll give a quick rundown of things as I came from that side of the Pacific:---

The thing that keeps the people in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines Moving ahead is the Part of "Chinese" in them (the Philippines have everything---whether European, American and others in the world). The Chinese have proven its adaptability to different conditions in different parts of the world.

The peoples of the region gained their independence from their colonial masters by proving that they can govern themselves. They are lavish spenders but they are hardworking and see to it that they keep on to their jobs even to the extent of skipping meals. (one example is how my mother used to set foot early in the morning to ask people to lend her money at 5 to 25% interest a month just to send her children to college).

We don't have to look too far to see how people from that region survive on their own. Within 2 years of setting foot here, they own their homes and acquire properties and businesses with the help of friends and relatives. This fact did not escape the eyes of the U.S. government in projecting that in the future, South-east asia will become one of the best markets for our goods.

To me, if somebody say that South-east asia will play dead for a while, I can't help but smile...
