In 1977, that wasn't happening. Carter will be right, the Earth is finite, and it's oil even more so. It's logic so plain, even a person claiming to be an engineer should be able to grasp it.

You're ignoring the time frame and the sense of needless urgency that Carter was trying to communicate.

He said back in 1977 that "we need to prepare QUICKLY for a third change." Well it didn't happen quickly now, did it?

Saying that Carter will eventually be right is like saying this guy will eventually be right:
