6. Obama is a very, very smart guy with a penchant for policy detail. Mitt Romney is also a very, very smart guy with a penchant for policy detail. I got the impression that Obama somehow hadn't been expecting someone who could go full frontal wonk with the president . . . probably because his prior GOP opponents have been nowhere near as verbally fluent, nor as in command of policy theory and practice, as Obama was This is the Obama Delusion. Obama is no policy wonk. He just thinks he is. Obama is a guy who has gotten A's all his life for acquiring and regurgitating a facile surface understanding of issues. He is deeply competent only in campaigning and machine politics, nothing else. Certainly not policy. And that's what last night showed! The minute he got pushback from someone who did know the issues, he fell apart. Had he really been a policy wonk, he could have answered with other facts. But he didn't have any. Obama has avoided pushback (and been shielded from it by a protective media) for his whole presidency. On the very few occasions when he enters a forum where the opposition is allowed to talk, he doesn't do well.
