I am by no means well-versed in the history of this material,

but my insides tell me that this is not a specifically muslim characteristic, though they are a loss to be able to deny it because of the open commandments. A society which does not acknowledge this openly might do this in a different way.

When I see a rabble loot and tear down a flag I see one kind of force in operation. When I see an army loot and tear down a flag I see another kind of force in operation. If one is blind, one feels no difference, and only experiences people, violence and burning flags in both cases ..... it is always *only* people. But the people in the activities are informed differently in each case, by the kinds of documents you point to.
