Rumour: Microsoft working with Huawei and Mediatek for Surface phone
October 5, 2012 | By Surur

Perennial leaker MSNerd, who was supposed to be retired, but who it seems can not resist stirring the pot again, has tweeted the above “super interesting tip”, stating that Microsoft is working with Huawei and Mediatek on the rumoured Surface phone, an own-branded phone which has received confirmation from multiple sources.

The news does suggest that, contrary to those rumours, the Surface phone may not be high-end after all – Mediatek is well known for the SOC solutions which are widely used on very low end smartphones mainly in China. Similarly Huawei’s main distribution is in China, a price sensitive market.

The suggestion is that we may be looking at the KIN Generation 2 – a low-end smartphone which may or may not be binary compatible with Windows Phone 8 handsets, which is unfortunately rather typical of Microsoft MO.

Given that the Surface phones are now widely accepted to be real, does the above rumour worry our readers? Let us know below
