Steve, Good post. Sheds some light on the whole issue.

One thing that is still not clear to me is, Why would CREAF be interested in buying OPTI's audio business? Seems to me that it was only a market share play. Otherwise all that Opti had was their new PCI based controller.

I'm just guessing but my read on all of this is that CREAF wants PCI audio dead, so they are buying up the weaker players to be sure that no one is available to supply PCI chips. MFST and INTC have announced that in mid 98 all ISA bus functionally will be phased out and that systems supporting ISA will not be licensed as Windows compatible after Mid 99. As I see it CREAF's only asdvantage is in Soundblaster compatible audio (ISA bus), everyone else wants PCI audio with DirectX. So while CREAF is profitable it needs to extend the life of Soundblaster.

Anyway, I'm real interested in what the latest NEW direction for OPTI will be.
