I fail to see the discrepancy in Romney's comments. If you cut rates by 20% and if you remove existing deductions the two statements could easily be true. ...........Specifically; If you cut rates by 20% and remove the deductions for home mortgage interest (like it should be removed) and Charitable deductions (which I also think should be removed) and change the child deductions (which should be changed) then both statements could be true. This would mean some in the middle class would pay more and some pay less - but the total amount could stay the same or even go up even.

This is a discussion we should be having.
